CEREC or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics has revolutionized the way teeth were restored with crowns. To understand CEREC or same day crowns better, it’s important to know about traditional dental crowns. Crowns are tooth-shaped caps used to cover the anatomical surface of damaged teeth to restore their color, shape, or alignment.
Traditional dental crowns are installed in place in two appointments. During the first appointment, the teeth are prepared and their impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab. The dental lab takes 2-3 weeks to custom-design a crown and sends it to the dentist. During the second appointment, the crown is permanently cemented in place. It is a tedious and time consuming process. But with CEREC or same-day crowns, you can get your teeth restored in a single appointment.
CEREC or same-day crowns use CAD/CAM technology, an advanced milling machine, and software-generated 3 D models of your teeth to custom-fabricate and install a crown in a single visit. The use of such state of the art technology helps fabricate crowns with great precision and efficiency. CEREC or same-day crowns have successfully pushed restorative dentistry in a forward direction.
How are CEREC or same day crowns fabricated and placed?
Below is a step-by-step rundown for the preparation and installation of same-day or CEREC crowns.
Step 1
The CEREC or same-day crown procedure begins with radiograph examination to determine whether you are an ideal candidate to receive the treatment or not. CEREC or same-day crowns can fix teeth that have damage present above the gum line.
Step 2
If you are deemed as an ideal candidate for the CEREC or same-day crown treatment, the dentist will design a custom treatment plan for you; based on your unique requirements.
Step 3
The damaged tooth is prepared to receive a CEREC or same-day crown. The damage is removed and the cavity is filled using a tooth filling. A drilling machine is used to reduce the tooth in order to create room for the dental crown. This is done under a local anesthetic to ward off pain and discomfort.
Step 4
Optical impressions of teeth are generated to record every little detail, which helps in fabricating natural-looking crowns.
Step 5
Optical impressions are processed to develop a virtual 3D model of your teeth.
Step 6
CEREC or same-day crowns are then fabricated using the 3D model obtained in the above step. A milling machine uses advanced technology to craft dental crowns from a high-quality ceramic block. The result is a perfectly shaped and aesthetically pleasing crown. The entire process takes only 20 minutes.
Step 7
The CEREC or same-day crown is then cemented in place using a permanent dental adhesive.
